One of the North’s largest independent care home providers is planning a multi million pound investment in Inverness.

Parklands Group has submitted plans to The Highland Council for a £6.5 million care home and assisted living suites in the city.

The development, at Milton of Leys, will include a 48 bed care home in the first phase and 16 assisted living suites in the second phase. The first phase is expected to open in 2019, subject to planning approval, and the development will create around 100 jobs when complete.

The two storey development will occupy a gap site next to Milton of Leys Primary School, an area earmarked for a care home in the Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan.

The care home will include 48 en-suite bedrooms, a café, hairdresser and eight day rooms. A second floor terrace will provide panoramic views of the Moray Firth.

The assisted living centre will consist of 16 assisted living suites and three day rooms and will be linked to the care home at ground and first floor levels.

The site will offer 40 car parking spaces and two disabled parking spaces.

Ron Taylor, managing director of Parklands Group, said: “We are delighted to add Inverness to our growing network of care homes in the Highlands. This facility will be at the heart of the fast growing Milton of Leys community and will offer stunning panoramic views to the north. It is our most ambitious investment yet and will deliver a flagship care facility for the Highland capital.

“Inverness has been in our sights for some time and we are very excited at the prospect of establishing a state of the art care hub for older people in the city. Our model combines traditional residential care for those who need it, and assisted living support for those who are able to lead independent lives.”

George Fraser, chief executive of Tulloch Homes, which owns the site, said: ”We are extremely pleased at concluding negotiations with Parklands Group for a care hub at Milton of Leys. We have been trying for a couple of years to seek an operator for land we own there and, in Parklands, we have attracted the ideal fit, bringing jobs and quality care. This is a key step forward in our continuing strategy of bringing enhanced facilities to this community.”

The investment has been welcomed by local business leaders and politicians.

Stewart Nicol, Chief Executive of Inverness Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is an exciting development for the Parklands Group and a real boost for the Inverness economy in terms of the jobs created during construction of the fantastic facility and the employment opportunities for the care sector.  The ongoing running of the centre will also be a potential boost for the local supply-chain.”

Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart said: “There is clearly a need for additional care capacity in Inverness, and across the Highlands, and I am delighted that Parklands, a company with a long history of providing quality care for older people, is establishing a new care facility in the city. As well as creating new jobs, this investment will deliver a vital community asset for the area.”
