eddie-the-eagleResidents living at Hanover Lodge have welcomed a new communal space after their landlord, Hanover Housing Association, unveiled a new lounge area where residents at the Stroud estate can relax and unwind.

The purpose-built common room provides a warm environment where residents can meet up with their neighbours for coffee mornings and enjoy social activities such as bingo, quiz nights and exercise classes.

The lounge was officially opened by former Olympian and local celebrity Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. Edwards was the first British skier since 1929 to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping when he captured the world’s imagination at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary. Some 25 residents joined friends and family at the launch which included a special morning tea and ribbon cutting ceremony.

Before the lounge was created, residents would host their social gatherings in a marquee in the communal gardens, but when winter arrived their get-togethers were less frequent.

The new communal area is largely thanks to the efforts of Hanover’s housing management team who worked tirelessly with residents to secure funding and design the new space.

Opening the lounge, Eddie Edwards said: “It’s a privilege to open this wonderful lounge, the residents have a fantastic place to socialise. I now know where to come for a party!”

Chris Boyes, Hanover’s Operations Manager said: “It has taken a bit of time but I am delighted with the final result. We now have an environment which enables residents to socialise and stay active within their local community.”

93 year old resident Eva Cottrell  said: “Our new lounge is lovely. I’m especially looking forward to celebrating our first Christmas in such comfy surrounds and hearing carols here with my friends and neighbours.”
