0806Pendine Queen01 0806Pendine Queen02Care home residents in Wrexham enjoyed a right royal knees up to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Sandwiches, iced drinks and lashings of ice creams were on the menu for residents of Pendine Park’s Gwern Alyn and Hillbury House care homes for the special afternoon party.

Professional entertainer Max Chard entertained residents with swing and old time numbers.

Pupils from the nearby St Joseph’s School also popped in and treated everybody to a concert of well-known sing-along songs.

Among the revellers was Gwern Alyn resident Bill Evans, 91, who recently attended Her Majesty’s garden party at Buckingham Palace with senior care practitioner Mandy Williams.

Bill said: “I’ll go to any party! You have to do them all if you get an invite don’t you? It’s nice to celebrate the Queen’s birthday with other residents.”

Hillbury House resident Brenda Simons, 85, enjoyed the party with her husband, Jack, who visits her every day from his Bangor-on-Dee home.

Jack said: “It’s a pleasure coming into see Brenda and meeting everyone. We have had a lovely party for the Queen’s birthday sitting out in the sun eating ice creams and listening to the entertainer.”

Sisters Doreen Cartwright, 83, and Blodwen Williams, 94, are both Hillbury House residents and both had a great time.

Doreen said: “We are free to enjoy ourselves and it’s nice having my sister living in Hillbury House too. It’s been a lovely party but I’m not singing anymore, I’ve lost my voice!”

0806Pendine Queen06 0806Pendine Queen03Veronica Marlow, 80, has been a resident of Gwern Alyn since January and loves her new home environment.

She said: “I have no other relatives other than a sister in Scotland and she has to use a wheelchair. So living here is like having an extended family around you.

“It’s nice to make new friends and have people to talk to and there is always something going on. I have never slept better in all my life since I have been here, it’s wonderful.”

She added: “And it’s great to have a party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. It’s just a pity we couldn’t invite her to come and join in!”

Yvonne Moran, the activities co-cordinator at Gwern Alyn, said: “The residents have had a great time and really enjoyed the party.

“The majority of residents wanted to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and they have all really enjoyed themselves. It’s been a lovely day.”

According to Max Chard,  he often performs at Pendine Park’s  care homes.

He said: “I always get a great reception from both residents and staff and really enjoy my visits. It’s actually a pleasure to come here. The residents have had a great parry today and they really celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday in style.”
