BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY:  Short respite bookings

Department of Health recently commissioned a new system that allows the public to directly make their own bookings of respite care beds. This facility can sit within the website of any care provider. It can slash overheads, increase loyalty and create new business streams.

How It Works

Registration and log in boxes for the ResBed system sits within any relevant local website. The system then appears in the colours, logo’s and banners of its host website. Authorised managers are able to set up a profile of their building, specify the types of care, base pricing and facilities on offer then list the number of beds.

Service users – or their nominated advocates – can input a requirement such as “Respite for Learning Disability Client in December 2011“. They then see bed availability for each night for the full month on one screen. If there are multiple homes on offer, they can be ordered by (a) price (b) closeness to the service user’s home (c) number of previous stays by this service user. Details of each home can be viewed. The user can select available nights and request a booking. They are given a page of stored data about the customer for whom they are booking. This can be updated.

Care home staff are able to view these incoming requests by email or through the website. They can accept, amend or reject a booking with an explanation the system communicates to the customer. If they accept, the tally of available beds for the chosen night(s) is reduced.

The system monitors care home response times. It also allows staff to manually book beds in response to bookings by phone, e-mail or letter. Senior users can access reports showing occupancy levels, overall availability and patterns of usage.

Crucially, customers are sorting out their own bookings, however fiddly and changeable their needs of the moment may be. Staff are simply making decisions about firm requests for a booking by qualified customers. The system is ideal for ad-hoc bookings, possibly at short notice. It can be used to arrange a one-night booking as easily as a four week requirement.
